Product Notes

Fafi A.K.A. 3Percent is a culture conscious Zimbabwean hip hop artist based in Denver, Colorado. He blends traditional African rhythms with hip-hop, dancehall and reggaeton beats to give a music that is world hip hop. Fafi started recording in 2000 when he co-produced Chauruka Faces The Music, a sound track album for a theatre play of the same name. He co-produced the album with renowned Zimbabwean musician Terminus Musindo. He followed this up with another co-production with Musindo, this time African Freedom Church's Jesu Unondidana in 2002. He then picked up the mic and released a single, Wafungei, and an album, Hakunazve, in 2004. Groove Or Die, recorded in the U.S.A. and Zimbabwe and produced by New York based world music producer Lou Gimenez and Denver based Thai Stick Rock Sounds, is Fafi's sophomore CD. Two tracks from the CD, 'Chenzira' and "Wantchito" were released as singles in 2007. "Chenzira" debuted on number 9 on the CMJ New World Top 10, the only self released work then on the charts. It also reached number 1 on Sarfm Radio's Top 20. New York based Sarfm Radio chose Fafi the African Artist of the Month for June, 2007. Fafi performed at the world music Grassroots Festival in Trumansburg, New York in 2005, the Palm Beach Reggae Club in Dallas, Texas, the Zimbabwe Business Expo in Los Angeles, California, and the Zimbabwean Music Festival (Zimfest) in Olympia, Washington in 2007 among other top venues and events. This year 2009 he performed at the Juneteenth Festival and Black Arts Festival in Denver and the Zimfest in Boulder. Fafi holds a Ph.D. in Performance Studies from New York University. Not only a skilled rapper but also an academic, poet, aspiring filmmaker and actor, Fafi brings rich, powerful and exploding narratives into music.
